10 min writing October 2026

Concept is simple. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write based on the following prompt.

$50 in a drawer w/ a note.

I open the cupboard and sigh. $50, again? I know I’m new at this and still making a name for myself, but this is a slap in the face with a wet pool noodle. $50 should get you my gran before her first mug of tea, not an able-bodied youth who’s been to the best assassin finishing school this side of west Madagascar. I still pick up the bill. Assassin school wasn’t cheap and this able-body requires quite a few sushi rolls to perform.

I glance at the note underneath the bill. ‘Please drop-off in the dining room. I want this to be a surprise for my kid’s birthday.’

The note is almost in my hand before I remember rule #32 – no evidence.

Packages? A kid’s birthday party?

I sit dumbfounded, the seconds ticking away. Should I refuse?

A teen in an ill-fitting corporate polo strides in.

“You order pizza?” The kid asks, smacking a glob of bright pink bubble gum.

I chamber a round. Like I said, this able-body needs a lot of food.
