10 min writing July 2026

Concept is simple. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write based on the following prompt.

Detective investigating the crime scene at a mansion

My hair flops like a wet seal out of my thinking cap. I comb it back into place, licking my pencil and placing it on my notepad, attempting to look professional.

“Where were you the evening of the 14th?”

A well-manicured man stares back, the disdain coloring his expression as brightly as the tropical shirt my uncle demands we bury him in.

“I was here preparing her majesty’s dinner. After serving her promptly at 7, I drew her bath. The cook and the stable master can account for my whereabouts.”

I look at the man, not bothering to scribble on the pad, but parsing the truth with what my nephew describes as vibing. The only thing I can parse is that I don’t like this man. He’s too well-spoken, too well-put together, and based on the tight pants, too well-endowed to have been content with a life of pampering the pompous. I smell a buried secret. It smells like scones??
